Located in Kenya, Mathews Mountain Range

The Mathews Mountain Range is a chain of peaks covered in dense dewy forest, and stands 2200m above the contrasting desert of the country’s northern district. Kitich lies in the southern part of the Mathew's Mountain range - a remote, unspoiled and rarely visited area of Kenya. The Camp overlooks a river glade within the lush indigenous forest home to elephant, leopard, bushbuck, buffalo, as well as ancient cycads, spectacular butterflies, Turacos and wild orchids.

SAFARI EXPERIENCE at Kitich Camp

Everything about Kitich Camp has been left as natural as possible. Because of the pristine and unexplored wilderness, Kitich Camp prefers to avoid traditional game drives, instead encouraging guests to take walking safaris guided by Samburu warriors. The Camp itself nestles in a verdant grove of fig trees, indigenous flowering shrubs and prehistoric cycad palms on the bank of the seasonal Ngeng River and is surrounded by thickly wooded hillsides and craggy peaks. WILDLIFE CONSERVATION & SOCIAL UPLIFTMENT

In partnership with Open Africa for sustainable tourism

The people of the southern Mathew's Range are the pastoral Samburu and Soyei. They gave the camp its name "Kitich" meaning "the place of happiness". In the heart of the Mathews Range Forest Reserve, Kitich Camp has worked with the local community for many years to preserve the pristine rainforest eco-system. Kitich Camp is within Namunyak Conservancy covering an area of approximately 2,800 km². Namunyak, the “place of peace”, is the name given to one of the last great stretches of genuine wilderness remaining in Kenya. The Conservancy has set up the Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust and all park fees, payable by every guest visiting Kitich Camp, are paid directly to the Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust.

The conservancy is managed by an elected community committee of 13 trustees, with the mandate to develop local health support, administer education bursaries, resolve grazing conflicts, develop water resources, and preserve the ecosystem and wildlife with an organised network of rangers. The conservancy is facilitated by the Northern Rangeland Trust with the support of Tusk Trust. Kitich Camp is a key tourism partner of the Namunyak Conservancy paying the highest bednight fee and working with the communities at grass root level. Read more
