Activities at Lion Sands

Located in South Africa, Sabi Sand

Activities included in tariff

Astronomy and star gazing is done during the evening game drives, and guests will enjoy a guided tour to our solar system and some African folklore. Guests can also be lucky enough to experience dining in the bushveld, under the African sky. Bush breakfast is taken at the river edge where the animals come for their morning drink. Bush Dinner is served on the open African plains by the light of paraffin lamps and a campfire – for many guests this has been the most memorable of safari experiences. Safari Lunches are available on request in the winter months, and guests can take a picnic to the winter hides to view wildlife that gathers in the area during that time. Guided Bush Walks are also one of the most enjoyed activities with Lion Sands rangers sharing some fascinating secrets and intricacies of the bush. Hippo Tours are also on offer – often morning and evening game drives focus on the inland animals, so this gives guests the opportunity to view hippo as well as the African Nile crocodiles. Wildlife Lectures are on every second day and provide an interesting and educative background on the area and wildlife.

Non-inclusive Activities

Ballooning takes place early in the morning with lift off at sunrise, a one hour flight over the magnificent Sabie River Valley and ends in a full English breakfast at a small country lodge. Clay Pigeon shooting is also available for guests. Rangers will accompany guests to the range and oversee the shoot. For golfing enthusiasts the Skukuza Golf Course located at Kruger National Park is an unfenced 9-hole course, open to the reserve as well as meandering wildlife. For ultimate relaxation and pampering the Lalamuka Health Spa offers a range of irresistible treatments to guests at Lion Sands. Helicoptor safari rides over the beautiful Drakensburg mountain range are a spectacular way to witness some of South Africa’s best geographical landmarks, and guests will enjoy a gourmet picnic at high altitude overlooking the vast and majestic Kruger National Park. The Cultural Village Experience is for guests who are interested in the lives and history of the local Shangaan people. The community has a long history, and share their forefathers with the great King Shaka Zulu. The tour is taken by a professional Shangaan guide who will educate guests on some of the customs and history of the Shangaan people. At the Huntington Home Based Care Organisation, guests can experience traditional dances, and educative HIV/AIDS plays. Guests will also visit the Henna Pre-school to socialize with the children, check out the nearby craft market, or even try some local cuisine

Chalkey Treehouse

The Chalkey Treehouse is built at the original site where Guy Aubrey Chalkey set up camp beyond the reaches of dangerous African predators. A beautiful bush bedroom is open to the elements atop a 500 year old Leadwood Tree. This is for guests seeking an intimate experience with the African bush, and it truly is an unique experience to spend a night alone in the wilderness under the dark night sky. At sunset a maximum of 2 guests will be served drinks and dinner to the calls of the wild as the nocturnal wildlife begins to stir.  In the morning guests are collected for a game drive during which they will enjoy a bush breakfast under the African sun.
