The Cavern Resort and Spa

The Cavern Resort and Spa is located in the Northern Drakensberg, three and a half hours from Gauteng and three hours from Durban on excellent tarred roads.

Named after the Cannibal Cavern, the resort is situated on 3 000ha of private mountain reserve adjacent to the Amphitheatre and Royal Natal National Park, a World Heritage Site.

The Cavern is set in a secluded valley beneath massive sandstone cliffs. The thatch accommodation and facilities blend beautifully with the natural surroundings of the area. The Cavern is home to numerous Bushman paintings, 213 species of birds, 150 species of trees and many wild animals.

Accommodation:

The Cavern Resort and Spa offers two types of accommodation (Standard and Superior) which have been rated “highly recommended” by the Automobile Association of South Africa.

Standard accommodation:

The Standard accommodation is set in lush garden landscapes with a vibrant mix of indigenous planting, filled with the sounds of birdlife. Each room has a patio.

Superior accommodation:

The finely appointed Superior accommodation has magnificent views of the surrounding mountains with private patios. All accommodation has a television and bar fridge.

Superior suites:

With a superior finishing touch, the suites have their own private fireplaces, patio, television and bar fridges. They have magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and you can hear waterfalls and streams rushing through indigenous forests.

Food and beverages:

The dining room offers a table d’hôte menu and weekly functions include Lunch in the Sun, Boma Buffets and Potjie Pots. A range of beers and a selection of South African wines are available. The Emaweni Cave Bar is also fully licensed.

Activities:

  • Daily guided hikes to destinations such as Thonsela Cave, Cannibal Cavern, Echo Cave and Sungubala. For the more energetic hikers, walks to the Tugela Gorge and to the top of the Amphitheatre can be organised. All Cavern guided walks visit places of beauty and historic interest, such as Lone Rock, with its exquisite rock art. Another popular activity is the breakfast walk, ending off with a scrumptious breakfast, overlooking the picturesque Cavern Valley;
  • Sport and recreational facilities – from guided walks to horse trails through splendid scenery. Horse riders of all abilities will find an ideal mount in the stable of more than twenty horses. Each day Cavern grooms lead rides through splendid scenery;
  • Jeep trips; and
  • Trout fishing in five well-stocked dams.
