Art and Craft Route allows visitors to experience the mingling of cultures, images and languages and the throb and vibe of Newcastle and it’s surrounds’ streets and alleyways. Appreciate the significance and meaning of traditional and contemporary African Art, by visiting the artists at their studios, or places of work.
A difficulty that artists face is that many cannot afford to depend on their art production alone and this means that their studios cannot be open to the public on a daily basis. This route allows them to market their work through other outlets or by prior appointment. The artists may not always be available and it is a good idea to check their details and arrange a convenient time to view their work and meet them. Many of the African artists do not have access to telephones, but information on them can be obtained from the Carnegie Art Gallery.
