Buchanan’s Interiors has been in operation since 1994, while the glass studio was started in 2000. Buchanan’s Interiors offers a full interior decorating service. The office and shop is situated in a century-old wood and iron cottage, restored and filled with character and charm. Visitors are welcome to browse through the array of handcrafted items unique to the Buchanans. Cushions, table and bedlinen, glassware, ceramics and pottery, woodcrafts and many more home accessories as well as custom curtaining and upholstery are available.
The full range of glassware made at the Wood ‘n Glass Studio on the premises can be seen in the showroom. The studio is open for group visits by prior arrangement.
All the glassware on display at Buchanans is manufactured in the studio on the premises. Each kiln-formed item is individually handcrafted and irregularities merely add to their unique character, as no two will ever be the same. The glassware is created using a kiln and moulds. Some pieces are decorated or coloured using enamel powder, enamel paints, oxides or glazing before firing. Some pieces are also decorated by the decoupage technique after firing.
There are many methods of manipulating warm glass. Pieces can be created by fusing glass together, slumping into moulds, draping over forms or sagging the glass through shaped openings. Decoration of the pieces can also be achieved by using ‘stringers’ – which is hot glass that is stretched or twisted. Appliqué and inclusions are further methods of decoration.
