YATA was started in 2001 by a group of 15 youths who were concerned with the growing spread of Tuberculosis and Aids among the community. Sponsored by the ‘Love Life’ programme, they rented an old crèche building to work from and they go from school to school canvassing and giving educational classes against these two killer diseases. They currently have 10 full time members working on the programme on a voluntary basis.
They also have a number of ‘groundbreakers’ who assist them in their visits to the various schools. Although the groundbreakers get a small stipend from the Love Life organisation, the members have only their basic costs covered. They receive no Government Grants but the Department of Education provide logistic support to enable them to continue their visits to the schools.
