Victoria West is in the heart of the Karoo, approximately 615km from Cape Town. The area boasts a fantastic variety of bird species and several hiking trails, including the renowned evening walk which leads itself to a new experience and romance, especially if one is lucky enough to take advantage of the new moon when full.
The Karoo is famous for hunting and a wide variety of buck species can be found here. If hunting is not your sport, game viewing is available where unforgettable shots are substituted with a lens and binoculars. Bowling greens and tennis courts are available for those who are interested in social sport.
The main building of De Oude Scholen was built in 1891 during the historical Kimberley mine diggings and served as an education facility for children whose parents worked on the dig. Being the first primary school in Victoria-West, the building holds a vast history and an air of nostalgia found within its foundations.
Since its early days the building has served as a church and a bank and is now known as De Oude Scholen. This building has found its place in the dry Karoo and serves as a cool and refreshing oasis for the weary traveller.
Accommodation:
Guests have a choice between eleven units, consisting of double and single beds, family rooms and kitchenettes. All units have en-suite bathroom facilities and all required necessities are provided for. All units are equipped with DSTV, fridges and microwaves. Tea/coffee facilities are available in each room served with homemade rusks. Air-conditioning is available in some rooms (please enquire before booking), other accommodation are equipped with air coolers and fans. Electric blankets are also provided for the cold, winter nights. Heaters are installed in each unit.
A smoke-free environment is being promoted, but guests are welcome to smoke outside or in the bar area where ashtrays are provided.
