Dohne Agricultural Development Institute

Of interest to those with an agricultural bent, the Dohne Agricultural Development Institute is the seat of agricultural information in the Eastern Cape, where research in pasture science, animal production and agronomy is conducted, and a purely agricultural library is housed.

The famous Dohne merino sheep was developed at the Dohne Agricultural Research Institute – this breed is ideal for the production of mutton and wool in the Suurveld, that region of the Eastern Cape where the grazing is ‘sour’. The Institute was named after Jacob Ludwig Donhe, first of the Berlin missionaries.
