In this weavery visitors can witness the entire process of silk making – from cocoon processing, spinning, hand and machine weaving to the making of the final product.
Cocoons from African countries such as Kenya, Uganda and South Africa are being transformed into the most luxurious silk products. Kingdom Africa Silks Weavery does their own spinning, but also supports the Iterleng Spin Project based in Bushbuckridge. This is a community based project run by unemployed women. This gives mothers the opportunity to earn a living while keeping an eye on their children.
Kingdom Africa Silks Weavery also processes silk of the mopani worm, which produces a more rough textured material. This material is then beautifully worked into throws and cushions.
This weavery is the only working silk farm in South Africa. They originally manufactured the very popular silk duvets in South Africa.
