Kwa-Zamokuhle School for the Handicapped

Kwa-Zamokuhle is a rural special school in KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. It is situated in the area of ePhangweni Mission about 20km from Estcourt. We cater for physically disabled learners as well as some mild intellectually and learning impaired learners. Presently the enrolment of our learners is 150 that include boarders and day scholars. The school was officially registered with the Department of Education in 1987 and in 1988 it started functioning. It initially started with 45 physically impaired learners but as the years go by the numbers have now increased to 150 learners.

We have 10 different classes including two groups of skills training. These two groups are learners who have been identified as non-academic and in need of practical/life skills training.

The skills training includes the following activities:

  • Block making (bricks);
  • Pottery;
  • Material printing;
  • Baking;
  • Gardening;
  • Needlework;
  • Basic life skills; and
  • Future plans are also to do upholstery, woodwork and cooking.

In the academic stream we have classes from grade R to Grade 7. We implement the curriculum as prescribed by the department of education. The difference is that we do some adaptations and our pace in teaching and learning is a bit slower.

Our learners participate in different sports codes such as wheelchair basketball, table tennis, cerebral palsy soccer, athletics, hockey, netball and soccer for the intellectually impaired.

All grades participate in language festival and as an ECHO School we encourage all learners and staff to take care of the environment wherever they are at all times and to be proud of their school.

We have a staff of educators, administration, professional nurse, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, hostel staff and support staff (general assistance).

We hope that the number of boarders is going to increase due to the newly built hostel. Applicants can make appointments with the office for the assessments of their children before they can be admitted.
