Pilanesberg National Park, the 4th largest game reserve in South Africa, is also one of the finest, most scenic and easily accessible in all of Africa. Encircled by the crater of a huge extinct volcano formed over 13 000-million years ago, the Park boasts the Big 5 game found in the ‘wild’ corners of the continent yet it is a ‘tame’ 1½ hours’ drive from Johannesburg.
A host of attractions awaits the visitor, including walking trails, game-viewing excursions, overnight camping and hunting trips. A hot air balloon excursion over the Pilanesberg National Park is also available. The Mankwe Dam at the centre of the reserve offers photographic opportunities second to none.
Birdlife at Pilanesberg is famously prolific. A catalogue lovingly compiled by local ornithological clubs is available to less experienced birders to assist them during their stay. Visit their website for details.
