The Golden Gate Highlands National Park is a protected area some 11 600 hectares in extent. It comprises primarily highland habitat and is home to a variety of mammals including Black Wildebeest, Eland, Blesbok, Oribi, Springbok and Burchell’s Zebra. Bird species include the rare Bearded Vulture and the equally rare Bald Ibis that breed on the ledges of the spectacular sandstone cliffs.
Tourist facilities, from camping and self-catering to hotel accommodation, are available at Brandwag Restcamp, Glen Reenen Restcamp and Wilgenhof Hostel. Picnic sites, a curio shop, restaurant, laundromat and conference facilities are also available.
