Amafelandawonye Poultry Project

The Amafeladawonye Poultry Project is situated close to the Midros sewerage plant in Middelburg, and started in June 2005.

The 26 impoverished women involved at that stage, moved away from their original business idea of growing a community garden due to the lack of ground water in Middelburg, and started this poultry business instead.

This project involves battery chicken farming, where the eggs are sold to people in Middelburg and the surrounding areas. Since 2005 the ladies involved in this project expanded their business by doing beadwork whenever they have time available. This initiative is a good example of previously disadvantage women who empowered themselves to improve their circumstances.
