About twelve women in the community, who were unemployed, started the Batande Elufefeni Community project in June 2000. When it was started they had only two sewing machines, and now several machines have been added. The joining fee for new participants is R50.00. With this money materials such as beads are bought, with which they make traditional Xhosa garments and beadwork products.
Councillors in the area monitor the project and the women have joined the Mbashe Initiative for crafters at district level. This provides an opportunity for them to display their products for visitors to see.
