Founded in 1916, the history of Fort Hare is closely associated with that of the liberation movements and many of its personalities and heroes in South Africa, including Nelson Mandela and Steve Biko.
Of interest are its National Heritage and Cultural Centre, the Liberation Archives, Heritage Museum and Art Gallery, containing rich examples of art works, ceramics, woodcarvings, and African poetry and writings.
