Willowmore Gateway Route

Features

The Willowmore Gateway includes the town of Willowmore and the surrounding Willowmore district. Willowmore is the northern gateway to the Baviaanskloof and Groot River Valley – being the nearest town to the proclaimed Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve – however it is also a place that visitors can spend a few days, exploring the town’s interesting Victorian and Edwardian architecture, and enjoying its village atmosphere and hospitality.  Spending a few days in the area, visitors might get to hear about the ghost of an English soldier that walks the street on occasion and be invited to visit one of the local shebeens, for a totally different, and always thoroughly enjoyable experience. For those interested in history, there are graves from the Anglo-Boer war, an old Jewish graveyard, the Old Prison and the Lodge of Peace and Harmony to explore.

Willowmore is also part of the mohair- and wool-farming district, and other activities offered in the Willowmore district include farm stays, 4×4 trails, excursions to Aasvoelberg (for beautiful views and to see proteas), game-viewing, bird-watching (especially good at Baker’s Dam), hiking and mountain biking.
